Leo's 90th Birthday Celebration. . . .

In my previous post titled "A Trip To Panaca", you
can read about the celebration of my brother Leo's
90th birthday.  The party was held at "The Castle",
Leo and Kathy's home in Panaca, on Saturday
May 19, 2011.

Leo and Kathy's daughter Felicia, son Vick, and
several of their grandchilren, did a fantastic job
of planning and hosting the party.  It was fun to
see their adorable little great grandchildren.    .

It was a lovely party whose guests were limited
to their immediate family, Leo's siblings Ina and
George Wimsatt and Delores and Pete Horlacher,
cousins, close friends, neighbors, and some of
Panaca's long time residents.

A delicious barbegue dinner with all of the trimmings
was served for all to enjoy, with birthday cake and
ice cream for dessert.  Each of the women at the
party was gifted with a "cupcake in a jar" festooned
with a lovely and colorful bow.  Kudos to Leo
and Kathy's grandchildren, Jordan and his wife
Nikki, Jared and his wife, Alecia, and granddaughter,
Katrina, for all of their loving preparations which
made the party so very special for their grandparents.

I know that everyone in attendance had a wonderful
time visiting with family and friends.

Felicia was taking pictures and sent me these so I
could post them on my blog.  Thank you Felicia.

Labor Day With Miranda. . . .

We had a very nice Labor Day this year.  It was
quiet and low key. just what I needed.

Over the last year or so, Miranda's suspicions
that she was allergic to gluten, proved to be true.
Sensitivity to gluten is not a pleasant thing to
endure.  A gluten allergy causes many adverse
symptoms, some of which include headaches,
migraines, lethargy and tiredness, as well as
muscle disturbances and bone and joint pain.
She did a lot of research on gluten allergy and
consulted a doctor.  As she was experiencing
many of these symptoms, she decided she
needed to remove gluten from her diet.

Miranda always enjoyed cooking and when
she would come to visit us, she often helped
prepare a meal.  After she was found to have
an allergy to gluten, her eating took a whole
different pattern.  We found that when she
would come to visit, we usually went out to
eat as we didn't stock the supplies to cook
gluten free.  We found some restaurants
with gluten free menus and many of them
are her favorites.

More restaurants are becoming  aware of the
large number of people with wheat and gluten
allergies and work to accommodate them.

Eating out can't always take the place of a
good home cooked meal and the fun of
preparing it.  So, on Labor Day, George and
Miranda decided they would work together
to prepare a delicious gluten free dinner.
They both did some grocery shopping and
Miranda also brought ingredients for planned
dishes that she had at home.

They planned a menu of standing rib roast,
sweet potato fries, Asian cole slaw, gluten
free French Bread, and for our desert,
Miranda made Red Velvet cupcakes with
cream cheese frosting.

George was excited to cook the standing rib
roast.  It would be the first roast he had cooked
in his Nuwave Infared Oven which he and Rhonda
recently became proud owners, and I might add,
are a bit obsessed with the new way of cooking
many of our favorite foods.  This is fueled, in
some part, because of mine and Steve's opinion
that everything "tastes so very good."

Everything turned out to be delicious.  Miranda's
cupcakes were to die for and very pretty to look at.
We had a very nice, relaxing dinner, a lot of good
conversation, and quality family time together.

I didn't do much of anything.  I critiqued what
they were doing, often to their chagrin, and
basically made a pest of myself.  It was great
and just what I needed to do.

Miranda had brought me a lovely bouquet of
flowers in a cute vase with purple and yellow
tissue paper and a turquoise bow.  This bouquet
did not need water, hence the use of the tissue paper.
Why?  Because it was a chocolate bouquet
featuring the best of the best along with some of
my favorite candy sticks.  As bouquets go, it
doesn't get much better than chocolate.  It might
not smell like roses, but it sure does taste delicious.

All in all, it was a lovely day.

Harlee Mae Colburn - My beautiful Little Namesake. . . .

Harlee Mae Colburn was born August 14, 2012 at
3:33 P.M.  She weighed 6 lbs 13 ozs and was 19"
long  She is our 7th great grandchild, 3 boys and
 4 girls

She is beautiful. We were so excited when she was
born and we were looking forward to having her safely
at home with her mom and dad and her adorable big
sister, Montana.

I did not know until a notice of her birth was posted
on Facebook, that she was given my middle name,
Mae.  I was totally surprised and it made me cry.

It is an honor to have someone think enough of you,
their ancestor, to have their child carry on your name.

Trey's paternal grandmother, Donna, also has Mae
as her middle name, and so Harlee shares that
name with both of her great grandmothers.

When I held her for the first time and looked into
that beautiful little face, my heart swelled with
love and pride and I found myself thinking how
nice it is to know that at least in some small part,
a name has been carried on.

Thank you Trey and Jenna.

Breakfast By George. . . .September 2012

After a very successful family reunion, Paul,
Joanne, Chris,  Jeni, Ethan, Ryan, and Justin
had left to return home.  Those who were
still here continued to spend time together.

After they left, George and I were talking with
Craig and Tracy and the subject of family
traditions came up.  Soon we were reminiscing
about one of our favorite traditions, George's
famous cinnamon rolls.  We raved to Tracy
about how delicious they are.  She wanted
some.  George said he would cook breakfast
for those of us who were still here and it would
 feature his cinnamon rolls.

We set the date for the following Wednesday.
George did all of the shopping on Monday, and
Tuesday evening he made his cinnamon rolls.
My job was to clean up as he prepared and baked
them, because as you know, every chef needs a
good cleaner upper.  I can also report that when
they were baked and had cooled for a while, I
made the glaze and applied it to each one of them.

Craig, Tracy, Josh, Cameron, and Chasity, Rhonda,
Brinton, his girl friend Allison, and her adorable little
girl, Presley, Jenna and our cute and funny little pistol,
Montana, joined George and I for a great breakfast.
We missed Cote, Brexton, and Nixin, who were
with their mom, Trey couldn't be absent from the
Police Academy but since it was his birthday, we
sent a pan of cinnamon rolls home for him.  Steve
had a prior engagement booked and Miranda had to
work, but she and her boyfriend, Ryan, came by
later so he could have some cinnamon rolls.

Breakfast was typical of one of George's fantastic
meals.  He served eggs, scrambled or fried to
order, potato breakfast casserole, bacon, and
biscuits.  It came with a variety of condiments;
honey,  jam, salsa, catsup, mustard pickle
(Mom' recipe) and a choice of several beverages,
consisting of milk, passion fruit or orange juice,
plain or chocolate milk.

And, of course, the reason for the breakfast. . . .
lots and lots of cinnamon rolls.

We had a great time.  There was lots of laughter,
silly antics, and just good old down home fun.
Isn't family great?

I am including a picture of Justin and Trey taken
when they came by to see us prior to Trey taking
Justin to the airport to catch his flight.
